Notes/History
The Lightning Class Missile Ship was an early generation assault cruiser,
meant to work in a fleet role.  Its primary weapon was a triple barreled
missile launcher, though it also had a pair of laser turrets for backup.
It had a crew of 20, with little internal automation.

Alex Wildstar commanded a Lightning Class Ship (the 'Paladin') at the
Battle of Pluto in the first episode of Star Blazers/SBY.  The ship fought
bravely, but was quickly overwhelmed by the Gamilons.

With the arrival of Wave Motion technology, the Lightning class was quickly
made obsolete, and replaced with more powerful designs.   However, for its
time, it was a relatively inexpensive ship, could be quickly mass produced,
and was able to inflict a great deal of damage.

Game notes:Antimissile weapon modifier: This is a variant of the Autofire
rules; with it, the ship is able to launch attacks against incoming missile
swarms.  When used against missiles, the defending ship makes an attack roll
against the incoming swarm; in the Yamato's case, it makes 2 (multiple
attacks: Counter Attack Missiles and the Pulse Laser guns, both treated as
autofire), and subtracts the damage done from the damage total of the
incoming swarm

Example: A Gamilonian Missile Ship Fires a swarm of missiles at the Yamato,
total Damage 120 points.  The Yamato responds first with the CA missiles,
and rolls.  It beats the Gamilon's attack roll by 2, reducing the missile
swarm's damage by 60.  Then, the Pulse Lasers activate, and match the
Gamilon's original attack roll, reducing the missile attack by an
additional 30 points, leaving only 30 of the original 120 points of
damage to hit the Yamato.  Any modifiers (Burning, Penetrating, etc)
are applied to the damage that gets through.  Anti missile systems are
unable to launch attacks against ships, however.

Experimental Design flaw: this means that, whenever the GM wills it, the
ship with this defect will suffer breakdowns, as all the bugs are not yet
fully removed from the system.  In Star Blazers, this is seen when the
Yamato must make several stops in the Solar System for repairs after the
first space warp, and after firing the Wave Motion gun.

Story:
Probably the most famous of the anime space battleships, the Yamato/Argo is
one of Leiji Matsumuto's best known creations.

The Yamato was constructed as a last hope to save Earth from the Gamilonian
planetary bombardment.  Constructed with the design notes sent by Queen
Starsha of Iscandar, the Yamato is one of the toughest all around ships in
the EDF fleet.  It is capable of withstanding levels of punishment that
would devastate lesser ships, and is virtually self-sufficient.  When it
left Earth for Iscandar, it was crewed by the best and the brightest the EDF
had to offer.

The Armament of the Yamato consists of 5 powerful 'Shock Cannons', powerful
energy weapons capable of destroying Gamilonian attack cruisers with only a
few shots.  In addition, the ship carries a powerful defense grid, a la
Babylon 5, consisting of counter attack missiles and pulse lasers, capable
of defending the ship from all but the heaviest missile bombardment.  It
also carries a set of 'Stack Missiles', which are seen when the Yamato
landed on Pluto.  These are powerful missiles, capable of being launched
from underwater.  Also, the ship has a bow mounted, 6-tube Torpedo Launcher,
used when the ship is submerged.  Backing up these formidable weapons is the
fighter deck that carries the Black Tiger space fightercraft .  The Yamato
could easily wage a one-ship war against a numerically superior opponent,
which it has done several times (Gamilons, Comet Empire, Bolar Federation,
etc.)

Of course, the most famous weapon of the Yamato is the Wave Motion Gun.
Concentrating tachyon particles in the forward gun chamber, the Wave Motion
Gun is one of, if not the, most powerful weapons in the Star Blazers
universe.  The damage it deals is easily capable of destroying capital
ships of equal size to the Yamato. However, firing the Wave Motion Gun
requires that the ship channels all available energy to firing the cannon,
rendering it effectively helpless.  The ship is similarly limited when
making a space warp.

Notes:
I honestly have no idea if the 'Delayed Action' missiles used in the
Beeland episode were real, or just a dub invention.  I've heard it argued
both ways.  I'm leaving the notes for it in, the GM can include the missiles
as part of the BT's armament if he/she so wishes.

This is a write-up for the fightercraft carried by the Argo/Yamato
in the Iscandar series.  The Black Tigers are relatively undergunned
compared to the Gamilon Destroyers, but they still did an excellent job
in defending the ship when sent into combat.  Derek Wildstar's fighter,
referred to as the 'Super Star' in the dub (Cosmo Zero in the original, if
I remember correctly), was of a different design (see below).
