More than highspeed Internet,
we keep you connected
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is technology used to deliver a highspeed Internet connection through conventional old copper wire telephone lines at a much faster connection than 56k dial-up without disrupting telephone calls.
The fastest dial-up modems are rated at 56 Kbps or 56 kilobits per second, In comparison, ADSL allows connection speeds from 1.5 to 8 Mbps (megabits per second), depending on which of Lightspeed’s ADSL service you have subscribed to.
Lightspeed's ADSL uses standard telephone lines to transmit data on a digital frequency, which are separate from the analog signals telephones and fax machines use. Since the ADSL signal is operating on a different frequency, the telephone can be used normally, even when surfing the Web with Lightspeed's ADSL service. Even though telephone service can co-exist with ADSL, having a telephone is no longer a requirement to get Lightspeed's ADSL Internet connection. If you do have an active telephone the only requirement will be that every telephone or fax machine must have an inexpensive DSL filter installed to remove any "white noise" on the line that might interfere with the digital ADSL service.
Lightspeed's ADSL connection is an "always on" service, meaning that as long as your computer is powered on, it will automatically stay connected to the Internet unless you manually disconnect it. ADSL is especially suited for gamers, CAD use, streaming multimedia and downloading large files. Families can share a single ADSL account with the addition of some basic networking equipment such as a router/firewall appliance designed specifically for ADSL connections. Unlike dial-up service, which stipulates only one session be instigated at a time, multiple family members can be using a Lightspeed ADSL connection simultaneously.
Lightspeed offers ADSL service to the majority of locations in British Columbia and Alberta and everyday we're increasing our service areas. Some customers may also be able to take advantage of our newer ADSL2 connections, which have even greater speeds, up to 24 Mbps. Call us during regular business hours to see if you can get a Lightspeed connection for your home.
